Rotary Laser Levels produce a level laser line around a work space in 360 degrees. Some models are for indoor use only, and some models will handle indoor and outdoor use. A Rotary Laser level is a manual-leveling or automatic-leveling type of level (automatic-leveling are also sometimes called "self-leveling"). If you plan to use a rotary laser level that is made for outdoor exterior work, you will need a laser detector ; detectors are also known as receivers or sensors, since the laser beams cannot usually be seen by the human eye in bright conditions. Plus, detectors generally increase the distance that a beam can used.
Also understand that some Rotary Laser levels will handle "Grade" which means their beam will tilt to a percentage allowing you to lay pipe or grade driveways at a percent slope. Some types of Rotary Laser level models that do grade will allow you to enter the desired slope percent into the keypad, and some don't have that feature. The ones that do not let you enter the grade percentage, you will have to do the math yourself and then tilt the beam to meet your desired slope. There is a lot of rotary laser level to choose from. It is generally recommend that you first define the tasks you're going to want to accomplish with your rotary laser level. Then you should begin looking at the features you might want, such as; plumb-up beam, plumb-down beam, variable rotation speed or fixed rotation speed, accuracy, detector included or not included, some kits offer "interior" packages and include a ceiling or wall mount bracket, and some kits offer tripods and grade rods included.
A popular rotary laser level is the CST/Berger 57-ALHV Self-Leveling Horizontal/Vertical Laser.
The CST/Berger 57-ALHV Electronic Self Leveling Dual Beam Rotary Laser Level offers fast and simple leveling power to handle your toughest jobs with less manpower. With one button operation, the 57-ALHV rotary laser level levels itself. It has electronic cross-axis leveling which allows grade matching for basic slope work, while maintaining accuracy in the cross-slope. No more fussing with leveling screws or level bubbles. Just press the "ON" button and you are ready to go in a matter of seconds. The built in Anti-Drift System (ADS) or height of instrument alert provides peace of mind when working on busy job sites, by alerting the operator that the instrument has been moved due to tripod movement, accidental bumps or ground settling. The 57-ALH was built Construction Site Tough and is dust and water proof, great in any weather conditions.
